The West Michigan Chapter was founded by Tammy Houda whose mother, Sharron Anderson, was diagnosed with Stage IV gastric cancer (adenocarcinoma) on June 21, 2012, and passed away only 17 days later on July 8, 2012 – the day before she was to start her chemo.

"We were stunned!  Mom occasionally had ‘normal' gastrointestinal complaints over the years like upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, and every once in a while a stomach ache.  She also had an H. pylori infection in 2009 that was treated with antibiotics.  She kept all of her doctor appointments and even had a colonoscopy the fall previous to her diagnosis – but no upper scope was ordered.  About two weeks before she was diagnosed, she started having significant stomach pains – but wanted to go on our annual week-long vacation with family and friends.  Two days after we returned she was admitted into the hospital, and our world was turned upside down.  I was at the hospital with her and my dad the day we got the official diagnosis, and I will forever remember the first words she said through tears after finding out.  She said ‘I want to see my babies grow up.'  My mom's pride and joy were her five amazing grandchildren."

It is for that reason that Tammy is passionate and determined about raising awareness of gastric cancer.  "Although there will be others, I don't want others to go through what we went through.  Mom didn't get a fighting chance so we will fight for her.  Through Debbie's Dream Foundation, I've already had amazing opportunities to do just that when I traveled to Washington DC in May 2013 to meet part of our DDF group for Patient Advocacy Day.  We made great strides, but certainly have much more to do."  Tammy is a registered nurse, but now is loving her role as a married stay-at-home mom to her two beautiful little boys.
