December 3, 2014 - DoD PRCRP Webinar

When researchers think about federal funding for new programs, they most often think about the NIH and CDC. However, the Department of Defense (DoD), through their Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRPs), offers research funding for many diseases, including gastric cancer.

If you're unsure how this program works, join me for a webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 3, during which Donna Kimbark, PhD, the program manager and technical lead for multiple programs and initiatives within DoD's CDMRPs, will review the types of award mechanisms, congressional directives and the program cycle.

Date:  Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Time:  Noon-1pm ET

June 19, 2014 - Deadliest Cancers Coalition Capitol Hill Briefing

Debbie's Dream Foundation (DDF) is an active member of the Deadliest Cancers Coalition, because stomach cancer is one of the eight deadliest cancers.  The Deadliest Cancers Coalition hosted a briefing at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington D.C. in order for others to learn about the growing threat of "deadly cancers." "Deadly cancers" are defined as cancers with five-year relative survival rates below 50%.  The five-year relative survival for stomach cancer is only 28%.  DDF advocate Adam Kuchinski spoke at the briefing.  Adam lost his 32 year old wife to stomach cancer after a 9 month battle.

Several of the hardest-to-treat cancers will soon take an even greater toll on that nation's health. A recent report published in the Cancer Journal predicts that our nation's leading causes of cancer-related death will change dramatically by 2030.

At the briefing, participants also learned about the newly established bipartisan Congressional Caucus on the Deadliest Cancers. These will serve as a hub of information on the nation's deadliest cancers and as a forum to aid Members of Congress and their staff in working together to address these cancers.  The Caucus will strive to raise awareness about the deadliest cancers and advocate for research and other measures to increase survival and to improve prevention, early detection, and treatment options for these cancers. Since this was a "congressional caucus", membership was open to both Senators and Representatives.
